This novel was written with my best friend in New York City. It was inspired by a comic strip in which two boys find an overturned truck carrying horses to the glue factory. In fact this book is about a Fresh Air child, an African American boy, who goes to the farm of a Quaker couple and their son for the summer. He gets off on the wrong foot, until he discovers an overturned horse van and tracks down (and hides away) an old nag he called “Roachy.” The book is about his trying desperately to keep the horse (and his dreams) alive. There were British and Danish editions. The Danish edition’s title translated as “Horse Reins.”
